Food Waste / Share Waste

Kendal residents don’t currently benefit from a municipal food waste collection service, this is set to change nationally from 2023, in the meantime the situation leaves three options:

  • Use everything and avoid creating food waste
  • Compost food waste at home
  • Throw food waste in the bin

When food waste is thrown in the bin it ends up in landfill. As food rots and degrades, it emits methane, a harmful gas which is 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide in terms of trapping heat in the atmosphere. In addition, considering all food carries carbon in its production, wasting food does not feature in a zero carbon lifestyle.

Whilst Kendal waits for a food waste service and composting is not your thing, there is a solution thanks to SHARE WASTE.

Share Waste is an app that connects you with committed composter’s who are seeking additional food waste. The app features a map to show you where and when you can donate your food waste.

Kendal does feature on the map but could do with a few more contributors so if you would welcome more waste or are looking for a sustainable solution to how you deal with yours, please check out the link below.
